Apartment Review

I lived here for approx five months (2008). When I first moved in, I used my debit card to pay my first month's rent. A few days later I noticed by debit card info was being used to purchase drugs at RX Drug Store as well as several other purchases. Note: I was only in Las Vegas for a few days and the only place I used my card was at the apartment. I'm not blaming any person in the management office because I do not know how my card info was leaked. However I believe that somehow a third party got my debit card number. I'm not blaming any person in the management office. It would be stupid for me to do so without any evidence. However, I believe my card info was taken by someone in the area. Since all the card purchases were in the local area near the apartment. I filed a police report and the bank reimbursed my money. I was taken to a model apartment that looked very nice. My mistake was not walking around and looking at the area and people or the apartment that they planned on moving me into. When I opened the door to my apartment, I noticed hundreds of coachroaches literally covering the walls and running on the ceiling and across the floor. An exterminator came by and killed several of them; however, the next day they were back in force. For several days afterwards, I purchased the roach baits and insecticide and was finally able to get it to a managable level. However, I was never able to completely get rid of them. There are holes behind the sink and the coachroaches moved from apartment to apartment. So, if you have a nasty neighbor then get ready for some guests. By the way, my apartment was not the only apartment with coachroaches. I probably had more than most people. All the residents that I talked to had problems with coachroaches. My furniture had not yet arrived so I slept on a foam cushion on the floor. I noticed bite marks on me. At first I thought it was from a spider. The marks would swell and turn red and last for days. Only after my furniture arrived and was in place did I realize that the place was infected with bed bugs. I sprayed the place myself with an insect fogger for about 3 hours and it seemed to work....but that was after months of suffering with about 30 bites. Domestic violence seems to be almost a daily occurrence. The area that I lived in was near a courtyard that was surrounded by buildings. This created quite an echo. I could hear conversations from inside my apartment. However, when a couple had their fight at 11pm to 3am it disturbed the entire area due to the large echo. In particular, I'll never forget the couple who would fight...the lady would be crying and shouting for hours sometimes in the middle of the day and sometimes in the afternoon. It shocked my brother who was visiting. I told him to ignore it...that it was a regular occurrence. There was at least one Sexual Offender. However he kept low. At least I never heard anything from him. My neighbor told me that an old man who lived upstairs from him was staring at his wife through window at night. (The same friend told me that his Honda Accord was stolen 7 times that year from the apartment parking lot. I found that hard to believe so I asked his wife. She said, "What are you talking about? The car was stolen 10 times!") There are several "crazy" people who live there. For example, one of them spends his time calling in threats to state agencies in the Las Vegas area. The cops came by one day and asked me if he was missing. I said, "Oh yes! He's missing in more ways than you can think!" Then there was the lady who climbed the tree at 4am and read books. I said, "She's where she belongs. She's a nut hanging from a tree." My neighbor was a heroin addict. I suspected something was going on when he had so many different visitors come by on a daily basis. I discovered this when his family from Illinois staged an intervention for him. Several people who live there don't work (or nobody will hire them for obvious reasons). When you have such low natured people who are attracted by the uneasiness of Fremont street and the local bar, you have trouble. These type of people are trouble makers who look for an opportunity to get into your business. For example, they might accuse you of letting your pet poop in the grass. Then they lie and said that they saw it happen two months ago. They run down to the management office to file a complaint when you know it it an absolute lie. Let's just say the management office has their "hands full" dealing with these people. The yard and grounds were kept very nice. The residents obviously need training on how to use trash cans. I remember stepping over the trash every morning. Sometimes it sickened me to see dirty diapers surrounding the picnic tables. I felt sorry for the person who had to pick up after this because it was a day-long job. Some of the residents would dump their trash in the laundry room rather than walk a few feet to a dumpster. They dumped because they knew somebody would be there to pick up after them. Next, the place is not too far from Fremont street and some of that crowd spills over to the apartment area. If you don't know what I'm talking about I suggest you drive down Freemont steet to see it for yourself. Additionally, a cheap bar is located across the street. Take the time to walk in an introduce yourself as a new neighbor. This might sound bad but do you know what kind of people that run down bars attract? Note: I do remember an afternoon when an apartment resident walked across the street to the bar and hit someone over the head. The cop drove his motorbike to the guy's apartment to have a talk. One of the residents got caught trying to break into his neighbor's apartment. Luckily someone called the police when they saw him going through the window. Approximately, about two weeks later the cops were by to talk to him again about breaking into another apartment. He wouldn't anwser the door. I remember someone told me that the cop said, "Oh, there's nothing I could do." I wondered the cops would have done anything if he hit a fellow cop. I think we know that answer. I've never seen so many visits my the police at an apartment complex in my life. The cops came by daily...not to just drive by but to arrest people or to knock on their door. After so many visits by cops I wondered if management should do a backgound check on new residents. A resident told me that a few years ago that it was much worse. There was an arrest of a pimp who had two women tied up in the room. The apartments were extremely small. In my opinion it's ok if you only have a few suitcases of clothes. But once you bring any furniture in then you run out of space quickly. I had to purchase extra storage at Public Storage. The walls are really thin. You can hear low music or conversations next door. Luckily my neighbors in the immediate vicinity kept the music at a reasonable level. However, if one person wants to play loud music (due to the surrounding building's echo) everyone has to hear it. I found the management staff very nice and helpful. However, I feel sorry for them because of the situation that they have to deal with. Only they know how discusions with the police take the precious time away from their management duties. They are working and doing their best in an impossible situation. This is just a small sample of what is going on around there. I can't be around to see everything. However, what I saw was enough to convince me to pay the transfer fee and to move out. The management kept my $200 pet fee that they said that they would reimburse me in one month. They may be well within their right to do so. But after months of dealing with coachroaches and bedbugs not to mention low-natured neighbors I felt slighted. I should look at the bright side and say that losing money to get out of that situation was well worth it. Don't let the cheap price influence your decision. That's what I did. Pay the extra money and live in a safe place that has a more space and fewer coachroaches. If you like the "low" crowd, then you have found the place of your dreams. Move in immediately.
